 Tips:
• Always keep your carry-on bags in sight and under control.
• Never leave your belongings unattended on chairs or luggage trolleys.

The “Dropped Object” Scam in Cafés

A common scam in cafés and restaurants.

How it happens:
• Someone approaches your table and “accidentally” drops headphones or keys under your table.
• While you lean down to help, the thief or an accomplice takes your bag, laptop, or phone from the table.
• By the time you notice, the thief is gone along with your belongings.

• When you drive off and notice the issue, you stop to inspect it. A “helpful” person approaches to offer assistance.
• While you’re distracted, an accomplice steals items from your car.

Tips:
• If you notice a flat tire, lock your car while checking it.
• Never leave valuables in your car, even in the trunk, as thieves may break windows or open the trunk to steal them.

Phone Snatching

Phones are one of the easiest targets for thieves in Barcelona.

How it happens:
• On the street: While taking pictures of landmarks (e.g., Sagrada Familia or Park Güell), a thief on a scooter or bike snatches your phone and quickly escapes.
• In the metro: A thief grabs your phone while you’re using it near the door and runs out right before the train doors close.

Tips:
• Use a phone lanyard or case with a strap to secure it to your wrist or neck.
• Hold your phone firmly and avoid using it near train doors or in crowded areas.

Theft in Cafés and Restaurants

Thieves often work in pairs to distract their victims.

How it happens:
• They may cut the strap of your backpack, even if it’s attached to the leg of a chair.
• A thief may place a newspaper or map over your phone or wallet, pretending to ask a question. When they leave, they take your valuables with them.

 Tips:
• Keep backpacks on your lap or in front of you where you can see them.
• Never leave your phone, wallet, or bag unattended, even for a moment.

Car Break-Ins

Cars, especially rental vehicles, are frequent targets for thieves in Barcelona.

How it happens:
• Thieves smash windows to grab items left inside.
• Even valuables hidden in the trunk can be stolen, as some thieves are skilled at breaking into locked trunks.

 Tips:
• Never leave anything valuable in your car, even if it’s hidden or for a short time.
• Remove rental car stickers or identifiers to avoid being marked as a tourist.

What to Do If Something Is Stolen in Barcelona

If you discover that your phone, wallet, bag, or other belongings have been stolen, try to stay calm and move to a safe place.

1. Do not chase or confront the thief.
Your personal safety is more important than recovering an item. Pickpockets may work in groups, so avoid confrontation and ask the police or nearby security staff for help.

2. Block your cards and secure your phone.
Contact your bank immediately and use your phone’s tracking or remote-locking service if available. If your passport was stolen, contact your embassy or consulate.

3. Report the theft.
For an emergency or immediate danger, call 112. You can also visit a Mossos d’Esquadra police station to file an official police report, known in Spanish as a denuncia. Keep a copy of the report for your bank, insurance company, or embassy.
