As a photographer and videographer in Barcelona, I work with people from all over the world and often get asked for advice about where to go—and what to avoid. Living and working here gives me a unique perspective, so here are my personal tips on what NOT to do in Barcelona, to help make your trip safe, enjoyable, and stress-free.

Don't Walk Around Raval at Night
Raval can feel lively during the day, but after dark, it’s not the safest area. Petty theft and uncomfortable situations are common. For evening walks, stick to safer neighborhoods.

Don’t Stay in the Diagonal Mar Area
Diagonal Mar is far from the heart of Barcelona. It lacks charm and becomes pretty empty at night. If you want to be close to the action, choose areas like Eixample or around Plaça Catalunya.

El Born is a Bar District — and It’s Hard to Get a Good Night’s Sleep
El Born is famous for its nightlife and bars that stay open until late. If you value peace and quiet, it’s not the best place to stay. If you decide to explore the bar scene, be careful and keep an eye on your belongings.

Don’t Wear Expensive Jewelry or Watches on the Streets
Fancy jewelry and luxury watches will draw the wrong kind of attention. Barcelona is known for skilled pickpockets, especially in crowded areas. It’s safer to leave valuables at the hotel.

Don’t Get Distracted by Strangers on the Street
If someone approaches you with a petition, a question, or offers help, stay alert. These are common distraction techniques used by pickpocket.

Don’t Eat on La Rambla
The restaurants and cafés on La Rambla are typically overpriced with mediocre food. You’ll find much better quality and atmosphere in Eixample, around Plaça Catalunya, and Gràcia. Always check Google reviews before sitting down somewhere.

Don’t Buy Bags or Shoes from Street Sellers, Especially Fake Brands
Many street sellers offer counterfeit bags, shoes, and accessories on blankets. Buying them is illegal, and if you’re caught by the police during the purchase, you may have to pay a fine. Plus, the quality is usually poor, and it’s just not worth it.

As a local photographer and videographer in Barcelona, I always want my clients and guests to enjoy the city to the fullest—safely and confidently.
